【First Japan Appearance】Introducing Krista Bourgeois, a modular live act opening a new era of Industrial Techno and Hard Techno #HCASN

Hello. I am Miyuki Omura, mainly active as an Industrial Hardcore DJ and composer. In this article, I will introduce Krista Bourgeois, an artist who will make her long-awaited Tokyo debut at HARDCORE ASSOCIATION on November 22.

Krista Bourgeois is from the United States. Now based in Rotterdam, she is a modular live performer and producer who is rapidly gaining a presence in Europe’s Hardcore/Hard Techno scene.

With a hybrid style that fuses Industrial Techno and Hardcore, she develops live sets that are inorganic and minimal yet possess overwhelming weight. By working patch cables and knobs and constructing sound in real time, she creates a distinctive groove unlike DJ performance. Her experimental approach to Hardcore is truly one of a kind and has electrified crowds around the world. This year she has also appeared at major festivals including Dominator, Harmony of Hardcore, and Decibel, making her one of the artists attracting the most attention right now. Her work has been released on renowned labels including PRSPCT Recordings, Karnarge Records, GO HARD OR GO HARDCORE led by the Industrial/Hard Techno queen Rebekah, Gabber Industries Berlin, and SOMA. This time, I would like to introduce some of Krista Bourgeois’s representative tracks and her appeal. Here is a live set at Rotterdam’s prestigious Now & Wow club 🔽

Introducing Krista Bourgeois’s music

🔹1. Creation Through Destruction / PRSPCT Recordings

The title track from Krista Bourgeois’s landmark debut EP Creation Through Destruction, released in November 2023 by the prestigious Dutch label PRSPCT Recordings. Built around a powerful four-on-the-floor kick, the sharpness of its attack, its distortion, and the thickness of its body are overwhelming. Digital texture and the rawness of analog equipment coexist, creating a distinctive contrast. Its sound, scattered throughout with metallic tones and mechanical noise, is Industrial Techno at its finest. As the title suggests, it is a decadent and beautiful track in which destruction and creation seem to intersect.

🔹2. Riding With Death / GO HARD OR GO HARDCORE

A track included on Rebekah’s label compilation GO HARD OR GO HARDCORE Vol.1 in April 2024. An impact sound that is neither quite snare nor noise rings out as though tearing through the space. Experimental devices such as irregular noise and the cutting in and out of sound are scattered throughout, while the beat firmly locks into a groove: a track made for the dance floor.

🔹3. Draconic Cycle (Krista Bourgeois Remix) /SOMA

A remix included on the Draconic Cycle EP, released by the long-established Scottish label Soma Records in June 2022.

The sharp hi-hats from the opening and the eerily rustling synth are striking. The kick is hard, but unlike the track introduced earlier, the distortion is restrained. The open space and minimal groove become addictive. While adding Krista Bourgeois’s characteristic experimental nuance, it is completely a track that shines in the club. It is a rewarding piece that lets you surrender to the sound on a dark floor and immerse yourself in her world.

The next generation of hard sound spreading around the world

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, a new wave of Industrial Hard Techno and Neo Rave has spread rapidly through European clubs and festivals. It seems to be attracting attention as “the next generation of hard sound,” having evolved by incorporating elements of Hardcore, Hardstyle, Psytrance, Industrial, and more.

Personally, I feel Neo Rave (Hard Techno) and Industrial Hard Techno each have their own characteristics. I understand that they emerged around similar times (forgive me if I am wrong), but Neo Rave seems to draw on Psytrance- and Hardstyle-like kick and screech approaches, with many accessible tracks suited to big festivals. Industrial Hard Techno, meanwhile, seems to be music that enjoys the groove through rugged beats, like the Russian-derived Hard Techno also called Bochka, with a darker, weightier atmosphere. Krista Bourgeois has fervent support from fans of both, which makes her quite a rare presence. I do not follow these genres professionally, so if anyone knows them well, I would be very happy to learn more.
